After Midnight Will Shutter on Broadway; Honeymoon in Vegas Eyeing the Brooks Atkinson

After Midnight will close at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre on June 29, the day current special guest star Patti LaBelle is due to depart. The show was nominated for seven Tonys, but only won one, for best choreography. At the time of its closing, the Broadway production will have run eight months and played 19 preview performances and 272 regular performances. According to The New York Times, Honeymoon in Vegas, which composer Jason Robert Brown recently confirmed is eyeing the Great White Way in the fall, may now go into the Brooks Atkinson.

Conceived by Jack Viertel and directed and choreographed by Warren Carlyle, After Midnight is an evocative new musical that tackles the sexy, smoky glamour of the Jazz Age, set in the heyday of Duke Ellington’s years at Harlem’s Cotton Club. In addition to LaBelle, the show currently stars Tony winner Adriane Lenox and Dule Hill. This summer, Gladys Knight and Natalie Cole had also been set to join the roster of special guest star vocalists.

After Midnight began performances on October 18, 2013 and officially opened on November 3. The producers are looking to take the show on a national tour.
